Muesli, granola, breakfast, fiber, sugar, saturated fat
Muesli was invented by Maximilian Bircher-Benner. This Swiss physician developed around the year 1900 as food for his patients. He experimented with vegetarian, raw and processed foods as much as possible because he was convinced that it is healthier than meat, canned foods and white sugar.
Apple paste
Bircher-Benner made a paste of grated apples, soaked oat flakes, lemon juice, milk and nuts and served it in his sanatorium as a light evening meal. The fruit was the main ingredient. He called it. His healthy snack became known as Bircher muesli, a combination of his name and the word granola, which in the Swiss German means something like mush or knitting.
In our granola became popular in the 60s, when more and more people became interested in healthy food. Our granola only seems hardly that of Dr Bircher-Benner. Nowadays there are besides many other oat cereals, for example wheat, barley, rye and spelled . In addition, there are some nuts, dried fruit, shredded coconut, chocolate and other seasonings added.
